Preventative Care With A Purpose
Tooth decay is one of the most common diseases affecting people of all ages. It is primarily caused by the streptococcus mutans bacteria which is highly prevalent in the mouth. This bacteria breaks down starches(sugars) that exist in the mouth and produce a lactic acid that dissolves the tooth to form a cavity. It is important to understand this basic mechanism behind tooth decay so that you can work to control the two main factors, bacteria and sugar, that can negatively affect your teeth. Primarily, if you reduce the amount of sugar consumed in your diet you will limit the amount of available oral sugar that the bacteria can digest. This will help prevent tooth decay.

Certain patients are more susceptible to tooth decay and thus require more routine dental checkups. Preventative dental care is about ensuring the long-term success of your teeth and smile.
